Context

Arena is a rotating game mode in League of Legends. In Arena 1.0, 4 teams of duos fought on floating platforms in the sky until only one team remained. The first release was crafted on a very tight timeline of only ~6 months. Three visual designers, including myself, built all the UI elements in the mode, from the pre-game lobby to the in-game HUDs to the end-of-game scoreboard. After overwhelmingly positive feedback from players, Arena’s time on the live servers was extended. The game mode was then taken offline and further developed with more complexities. Now, it’s a staple and a player favorite in our rotating game mode library.
